Quick Reference to Thread Sizes and Uses Fly tying threads commonly come in the following sizes, from the smallest to the biggest: Midge, 8/0, 6/0, 3/0 and A Both midge and 8/0 sizes can be used for midge flies. 8/0 and 6/0 sizes will work for standard wet flies, dry flies, nymphs and smaller streamers. 3/0 is adequate for for larger streamers and nymphs, as well as smaller bass bugs and saltwater flies. Size A will tie all the bigger flies: larger bass bugs, larger saltwater flies and larger streamers.
