TAPERED LEADERS AND TIPPET MATERIAL Undecided as to the leader you need? Use the "4-rule." Divide the fly size by 4 to determine the maximum tippet size needed. For example, a size 12 fly would require a leader tippet size 3X (smaller would be ok). In between sizes could go either way, smaller is usually better. Leader length? Longer leaders are preferred for late season, low water conditions for a more delicate presentation. None of these leaders have a loop to connect the leader to the fly line. Convenient leader loops are found in the section entitled "Leader Accessories."
