Dennis Potter - Opalescent Tinsel
A NEWCHALLENGE FOR FLY TYERS
Opal Tinsel Dry Flies
by Dennis Potter
I don’t carry any dubbed body caddis flies! That is a power-
ful statement but very true. My days of carrying caddis flies in
various shades of tan and olive, a pattern or two in cream and of
course black are long gone. I catch more fish than I ever did in the
“dubbed body” caddis days. How do I do it? Opal Tinsel!
UTC, Marriage Tinsel, Opal is the key to that success. This shiny,
gaudy, opalescent tinsel has nearly magic properties when it comes
to catching fish. Available in three widths, Opal Tinsel is easy to
work with, is very durable, repels water and nearly glows in the
dark. Put a small piece of Opal Tinsel in your hand and walk into a totally dark room. When you are well
away from the light, you will see a small glowing ribbon in your palm. The tinsel reflects the tiny bit of re-
maining light. It is a remarkable effect.
Take your favorite caddis patterns and replace the dubbed body with one of Opal Tinsel. My favorite conver-
sions are the venerable Elk Hair Caddis and the X-Caddis. They are now the Opal & Elk Caddis and the Opal
X-Caddis. They are my two workhorse caddis dry flies.
Don’t forget to try Opal Tinsel on some other dry flies. My parachute Adams days gone. They have been
replaced with the Opal Dun. The Royal Wulff is now the Opal wulff and so on.
Most of the dry fly work is done with medium width so I always have more of the medium width on hand
than the small or large size. Small is great for ribbing flies and large is better for the really big dry flies and of
course used for streamer bodies.
Give Opal Tinsel a try. It is an important yet inexpensive investment in your tying materials. “YOU WILL
CATCH MORE FISH!”
